Trust me, I get it. The newborn stage is more exhausting than you ever could have imagined, and the idea of being in portraits just a few weeks postpartum can feel overwhelming. Nothing fits quite right, you still feel puffy, and those bags under your eyes seem here to stay.
But mama, please hear me on this. These are some of the most important portraits you will ever take. They’ll become some of your most treasured memories of early motherhood, and one day, your little one will cherish them as well. Here’s why it’s so important to include parents in newborn photos, and how to feel comfortable and natural in front of the camera too!

We love to document life’s milestones like your wedding, your engagement, and your baby bump, but nothing compares to the moment you bring your baby home. This is the start of your family’s legacy, and you deserve to be in these memories, too.
So much about having a baby focuses on the mom. There are baby showers, doctor’s appointments, and maternity clothes, but newborn portraits are a beautiful chance to celebrate both parents. During every session, I capture portraits of each parent with the baby individually, along with family portraits of everyone together. You’re both stepping into these new roles as parents, and that’s worth honoring and celebrating with portraits.
I promise, the portraits with you in them will be your child’s favorite ones. As a toddler, they’ll love pointing out “Mommy” and “Daddy” in the album. As a teen, they’ll sit and laugh with you about how different everyone looked. Then, as an adult, they’ll treasure these portraits of you as new parents, holding them, loving them, and soaking in those first days together, especially when they approach that stage of life, too.
Family portraits are always included in every newborn session. I love starting with family portraits because your baby is most comfortable and peaceful in your arms. Plus, the emotion and love on everyone’s faces truly tells the best story.
I’ve solved the what to wear dilemma for you so you don’t have to stress by creating our Mama Wardrobe. This collection of dresses are designed specifically for postpartum moms. Each piece features soft, flowing fabrics with delicate details that photograph beautifully and are super flattering. This allows you to feel comfortable and confident.
Being included in newborn photos is something you will never regret! These early days pass in the blink of an eye. Taking the time to include yourself in your baby’s portraits ensures that you’ll have tangible memories of this fleeting, love-filled season. These will be memories you’ll cherish for a lifetime.
Saratoga Springs Newborn and Family Portraits

Now that we’ve gone over the importance of being included in newborn photos, here are tips to look natural and comfortable in the photos.
Avoid anything too tight or bulky (like heavy knits), and choose necklines you feel comfortable in. We can always adjust the fit with a safety pin or clip to adjust the fit of a dress and ensure everything photographs perfectly. Also, remember that I have a closet full of curated dresses that are light and neutral in color.
I’ll gently guide you into natural poses that flow seamlessly and flatter every one. My Saratoga Springs studio has soft, natural light that wraps beautifully around you for that timeless, beautiful effect.
Drinking plenty of water in the days before your session and moisturizing your skin will help you look and feel your best.
To avoid a double chin (which happens to everyone when looking down at the baby!), gently extend your chin forward first before looking down.
The most genuine expressions come when you forget about me and simply focus on your little one. I’ll keep the atmosphere relaxed and conversational so you can stay in the moment and keep focused on your baby. All the love and connection will shine through in your face, and you’ll adore these peaceful portraits.
Including parents in newborn portraits is about telling the full story of your family’s beginning. You’ll never regret being in these photos, but you might regret sitting them out. So come as you are, relax and trust the process, and let’s create portraits that you and your child will treasure for a lifetime.
