This Saratoga Springs newborn and family portraits featuring newborn girl, Madilynn Sage, and her big brother, Roland, was pure joy from start to finish! Roland was just shy of two years old when his baby sister arrived, and he absolutely stole the show with his adorable smile and infectious laugh. Watching him proudly hold and snuggle Madilynn for their sibling portraits was the sweetest thing. You could already see how much he adores her.

He did so amazing during their family portraits, and loved all my tricks behind the camera to keep his attention. I always tell families that newborn sessions with a toddler sibling often feel like it’s all about the toddler, and for the first half of it, that’s true!  We want big brother or sister to feel special, comfortable, and included.

During sessions like this, we spend the first portion focused on the family and sibling portraits, before capturing mostly newborn portraits. I’ll do everything to keep the older sibling happy and engaged. Once we’ve captured all those sweet, connected family moments, your toddler gets to take a well-deserved break to snack and play while we move on to the solo portraits of the baby.

This approach helps everyone feel more relaxed and confident. Younger kids typically do better at the start of the session than at the end, something I’ve learned through years of experience. That’s why we structure sessions to start with them first. This also helps ease any parent’s concerns about how a toddler might behave or cooperate. Instead, families can simply enjoy the experience knowing that every little moment is part of the story. 

Madilynn’s portraits are such a lovely reflection of that. Together, her solo portraits and the family images tell such a beautiful story of love, connection, and the beginning of this new chapter as a family of four. These family and sibling portraits are everything! I know they will look back fondly on these early moments and remember their love and family connection as well as the newborn sweetness.
