There’s something magical about Cape Cod at sunset: the golden light dancing on the water, the soft breeze, the giggles of little ones chasing waves. It’s no wonder families return year after year to make memories here, and then they bring their kids back when they become parents, too. I’ve been spending summers on Cape Cod for over two decades, and my kids are growing up knowing the same sandy beaches and creating the same summertime memories that I did, and I couldn’t be happier about it.

As a Cape Cod family photographer, I’m honored to help preserve those fleeting summer moments in timeless portraits that let you relive the warmth of your vacation all year long. There’s something so magical about beach portraits and I want them to feel as stress-free and joyful as they always wind up looking. 1.Timing is Everything—Let the Sunset Work Its Magic

All of my sessions are scheduled for the hour before sunset, known as “golden hour,” when the light is soft, warm, and incredibly flattering. This dreamy glow brings a timeless, painterly feel to your images. To make the most of this beautiful light, please plan to arrive 5-10 minutes early so we can settle in, take a breath, and start on time.

2.Happy Kids = Happy Photos

Sessions with little ones are all about flexibility and fun. Here’s how to keep things stress-free:

• Make sure your bellies are full. A light dinner or hearty snack before your session goes a long way.
• Keep them rested. If bedtime is usually early, consider a later nap that day or a bit of quiet downtime beforehand.
• Bring their favorites. A lovey, snack, or small toy can be comforting between shots.
• Let them be themselves. Some of the most treasured images come from unposed moments—running barefoot in the sand, cuddling close, or whispering secrets to mom and dad.
• Bring PJs for the ride home.  If you’re worried about a late bedtime, this is my favorite tip for a seamless evening.  A bottle of baby powder in the car will also help to take the sand right off of everyone’s feet & legs before heading home!

3. What to Wear: Simple, Soft, and Coordinated

Your outfits help set the tone of your portraits. Think timeless, natural, and cohesive without being too matchy-matchy.

Here’s what works beautifully on the beach:

• Soft neutrals and pastels. Shades like white, ivory, light blue, sage, dusty rose, and sand complement the natural tones of the Cape. Classic prints like plaid, madras, or Lilly Pulitzer also look amazing at the beach.
• Flowy dresses and linen shirts. These catch the breeze and create lovely movement in your photos.
• Barefoot is best. Let everyone feel the sand between their toes!
• Coordinate, don’t match. Choose a color palette and let each family member wear something that fits within it.
• Avoid logos and neon colors. These can distract from your faces and the emotion in your images.

4. Go With the Flow

Your session isn’t about stiff poses—it’s about real connection. I’ll gently guide you through natural prompts and playful interactions that bring out authentic smiles and sweet moments. Trust me — your session will be filled with games, running (for the kids!), and lots of giggles.  If your child needs a break or just wants to run, we’ll follow their lead. Some of the best portraits happen in those in-between, unscripted moments.  Don’t stress, and follow my lead.

5. Remember Why You’re Here

These portraits are more than just pictures. They’re a chance to slow down and soak in your family’s love. They’re a way to hold onto the softness of your toddler’s hand in yours, the way your child’s hair curls in the ocean breeze, the laughter that bubbles up when you’re all together.
