While we are living in the digital age, printed portraits still matter. I would even argue that they matter more now than ever before. That’s not to say digital images aren’t important, because they are, and you’ll always still receive them with your sessions! However, there is something to be said for the printed portraits and being able to run your fingers over an image while taking in the expressions and people portrayed. They give you the ability to remember a certain moment or season of life, allowing you to relive it or share it with someone you love.
Think back to your grandparents, and remember a time when you were listening to them tell stories about years past. You were probably curled up on the couch together, flipping through old family photo albums, right? The thin plastic crinkling under your fingers as you carefully turned every page, careful not to let any photos fall out.
You might remember seeing your mom holding you as a baby, her face full of love and awe. Maybe you saw photos of her as a brand-new parent, learning what it meant to have her heart walking around outside her body for the first time.
Now, picture your own children thirty years from now. They will want to look back at their childhood and see what life was like when they were small. They want to remember what you looked like as a new parent, how they fit into your arms and snuggled against you, the way your eyes lit up when they laughed, the softness of their baby cheeks and wispy toddler hair.
Where will they find these photos?
Will they have to sort through a stack of hard drives or folders on your computer? Search for a special adapter to whatever the plugs look like in the future? Search or guess a long-forgotten password to old cloud storage? Will the technology even support JPEGs by then?
This is why I truly believe that we cannot just rely on digital images for our legacy. This is why printed portraits still matter.
Printed portraits allow your family’s story to live on and also provides something tangible your children can hold in their hands, pass down, and revisit for generations. They don’t rely on technology; they simply exist, ready to be touched, shared, and cherished.
Beyond preserving memories for the future, printed portraits bring so much joy right now as they bring families together. When your children see themselves in framed family portraits on your walls, it reminds them every day that they are loved, that they belong, and that they are an important part of your family’s story, which has been shown to boost children’s self-esteem.
There’s something incredibly powerful about living in a home surrounded by happy memories on the walls and in albums. Seeing those moments daily builds confidence and security, helping children know they are deeply valued and loved.
My goal is always to make it easy for you to seamlessly incorporate your family portraits into your lives, which is why we’ll schedule a personalized ordering appointment after your portrait session. During this appointment I’ll help you choose your favorite images. Together, we’ll design wall galleries and albums that beautifully fit your home and lifestyle so that you and your family can enjoy for many years to come. My goal is to make it easy for you to enjoy your portraits, not just on your screens, but in your hands and in your home as well.
Of course, I know how important digital images are too, which is why you’ll always receive digital copies from your session. That way you are able to share with family and friends online, make more copies, or keep on your phone to revisit whenever you need a smile.
But the printed portraits? Those are your legacy.
The printed portraits are the ones your children will hold someday as they tell stories about their childhood. The ones that will live on long after screens go dark and technology changes. It’s so important that we remember that we are taking these for today and tomorrow.
Your family portraits will only become more valuable with time, and I am honored to be the one to help you preserve your legacy.
