Celebrating baby August’s first birthday in the studio with the cutest classic baby portraits was such a joy! I’ve loved working with this sweet family over the years, and it felt extra special to welcome them back for another milestone session. Two years ago, I photographed big sister Kennedy’s first birthday cake smash, so it was incredibly fun to recreate a similar timeless setup for her baby brother with a soft blue and white color palette that complemented Kennedy’s session so beautifully. Classic colors like these always photograph so well and keep the focus right where it belongs, which is on your baby and their personality.
Before the cake smash fun began, we captured family portraits together, and these moments ended up being some of my favorites from the entire session. Kennedy and August were so sweet and giggly together, and their playful sibling dynamic had everyone laughing.
One of my favorite little tricks during sessions is what I call “squeaking their bellies,” a silly moment that almost always earns the biggest smiles during sessions. Kennedy made us all laugh when she stopped everything and said, “You know, I think my baby brother thinks you’re really funny.”
Judging by the way August couldn’t stop giggling, I think she was right. We really captured the sweetest moments for this family, and had so much fun in the process! These are the moments I love most during sessions.
When it was time for the cake smash, August was more than ready to dig in. His mama baked the cake herself, and the frosting was absolutely perfect for smashing. He wasted no time digging in, happily enjoying his role as the star of the show.
Watching babies experience cake for the first time is always so much fun. Some are cautious, some dive right in, and August definitely leaned into the celebration with big smiles and frosting-covered fingers.
Of course, every cake smash session in the studio ends with the bathtub splash, one of my favorite traditions.
After all that frosting fun, the warm bubbly bath is the perfect way to clean up and capture a few extra sweet smiles. August absolutely loved it, splashing happily and giving us the biggest smiles to finish off his session.
Happy first birthday, sweet August!
