I was so excited when Leah and her family reached out to tell me that they were expecting their second baby. We met three years ago when their son was born. It will never cease to be one of my favorite things when families invite me to come back into their lives as they grow and welcome new little ones to the world. Now, their family has welcomed Baby Macie! I had the best time capturing their new addition during these newborn portraits for a baby girl!
Macie’s mama was excited to incorporate all the pinks, purples, and soft girly details into her daughter’s newborn portraits, in a minimalist and timeless way, of course! I love all of the layers and details we used to add a little color. This added interest to her images while still keeping this beautiful girl at the center and focusing on that oh-so-sweet newborn perfection.
Big brother was a little hesitant before the session. It’s common for many toddlers when their world is being rocked with the arrival of a new sibling and future best friend. To make this transition a little easier, I sent him a video of me showing him around the studio before the session. He arrived eager to check out the toys (the basket of trucks and the space shuttle were his favorite!) and the snacks. We worked at a speed that was comfortable for him. It was important to give him lots of breaks, and let him check up on his baby sister when he was ready. This amazing big brother enjoyed mama snuggles for a truly beautiful moment with his mom and new baby sister. I know this will be one of his mama’s most treasured portraits for the rest of her life.
This child-first approach is at the heart of how I photograph siblings during every single newborn session. I’ve found it’s best to give the siblings some control (choices of what to do first, where they want to sit, which wrap or bed should we use for baby, etc.), make it fun (snacks, toys, and wooden cameras always do the trick!), and give them the time they need to feel safe. I’ve spent nearly two decades working with young children, both as a photographer and before that as a teacher. All of that experience comes into play when keeping little ones happy during our portrait sessions.
Ready to schedule your newborn session in a studio that welcomes your entire family and wants them to feel involved in the process? Let’s chat! It’s important to me that your family feels loved and seen through the session. Your portraits should be enjoyable – and memorable, even after your final artwork has been delivered.
Save this post for late!
