As children grow, their personalities become more defined, their confidence blossoms, and it’s such a joy to capture who they are in this season of life, which is why big kid personality portraits are some of my favorite to capture. That was certainly the case with brothers Ezra and Alden during their recent Little Loves portrait session in our Saratoga Springs studio. At 9 and 5 years old, they each brought something completely unique to the session, and I loved celebrating both of their personalities.
Little Loves sessions are designed to be simple and completely centered around your child. These sessions take place in my timeless studio and are intentionally short, making them perfect for busy families while still giving us plenty of time to capture a wonderful variety of portraits. We laugh, play games, make silly faces, and create images that feel natural instead of overly posed.
As children get older, I find that one of the best ways to help them feel relaxed and comfortable is simply getting to know them beforehand.
For each Little Loves session, I ask parents a few questions about their children. My favorite thing is to ask what their favorite songs are so that I can make a playlist just for them! Then when they walk into the studio for the first time, they settle right away. I also love giving them some prompts and poses, and then asking them what they want me to take a picture of after they’ve gotten comfortable.
You never know what they’ll say! Sometimes it’s a twirl or a dance move they’ve been practicing. Other times it’s a funny face, or even pretending to shoot spider webs like Spider-man! Those genuine, candid moments usually become my favorite portraits, because they show off their personality.
Ezra and Alden made personality portraits so much fun. Both boys were incredibly sweet and so comfortable in front of the camera. Ezra, the proud big brother, especially loved helping choose his favorite portraits afterward. Meanwhile, Alden kept the creativity flowing by dreaming up new ideas for poses throughout the session. Together, they reminded me exactly why I love photographing big kids at these stages.
Childhood changes so quickly. One year they’re missing front teeth, the next they’re suddenly taller than you expected. During the big kid years, their interests also start to shift and their personalities continue to grow in beautiful ways. Little Loves portrait sessions are all about preserving this special season of childhood.
