I loved capturing James’s first birthday session and seeing the whole family. Turning one is a big deal, and I am so glad his mama planned a first birthday session. She envisioned a simple green and white cake smash with balloons, creating a classic backdrop with soft colors that kept all the attention on the birthday boy and his sweet personality. Mom also brought the cutest little birthday hat for James, which was the perfect detail for his milestone portraits.

From the moment we started, James was full of the sweetest expressions and the biggest smiles. Once we brought out the cake, he couldn’t wait to dig in, which made for the most joyful portraits. These first birthday sessions are always so much fun because every baby reacts a little differently, and their unique personalities truly shine.

As with every first birthday session in the studio, we began by capturing family portraits before bringing out the cake. I first met this family when I captured James’ studio newborn session. At that time, his big sister, Clara, was still adjusting to her brand-new role. Like many toddlers, she was a little shy and hesitant, which is completely normal during such a big life transition. Fast forward one year, and Clara was all smiles. She loved all my silly games and favorite tricks. It made me so happy to create these family portraits knowing that they would adore these ones with big sister smiling and celebrating her baby brother!

I know these sweet family portraits and joyful cake smash images with soft green and white balloons will be treasured for years to come, and it was such a joy to capture them.
