Sweet Simon was 6 weeks old when he and his family visited our Saratoga Springs studio for his intimate older newborn portraits. At this stage, he’s considered an older newborn. However, I absolutely love photographing babies during this sweet in-between season. Many people think newborn sessions have to occur right after birth, but that isn’t true. While earlier newborn photos are ideal for those iconic sleepy newborn portraits, there are so many benefits to an older newborn session!
So, if your baby is already a few weeks old and you’re worried you missed the newborn window, please know that it’s never too late. Every season of early parenthood is worth remembering.
Older newborn sessions are often better for parents. Mom is starting to feel more like herself again post-delivery. Those first few weeks at home with your newborn are a learning curve and mom has gone through so much at this point. Having a little extra time to heal, and get into a routine with your baby, helps when it comes to getting in front of the camera, because you’re often getting a little more sleep than you were initially. Parents everywhere can I agree, when you’re used to sleeping in 2 hour intervals, a 3 to 4 hour stretch can feel life-changing!
Beyond the benefits for parents, slightly older babies tend to make more eye contact and give the most adorable gummy smiles when interacting with family members. Parents have also had more time with their baby and tend to recognize certain expressions and know their personality better. Then, after receiving their final gallery they will recognize all the sweet faces and be able to remember the faces they made all the time at this age.
For this special six-week newborn session, we focused on family portraits to celebrate their new baby’s arrival. Every moment of the session was pure magic and I loved everything about it. I couldn’t wait to go through them after the session because I just knew they were going to be amazing. This year I’m leaning into more connection in our portraits, and I loved getting creative with their family portraits and celebrating this stage of life their family is in right now.
To complement the cozy feel of the session, we tried a new setup in the studio with the bed, which was perfect for cuddly portraits. Mom also wore one of our new dresses from Worth Collective that I added to the studio wardrobe this winter. Plus, baby Simon wore one of the many new knitted rompers we added to our collection.
Everything about this session felt warm and intimate. Capturing the sweet connection between this beautiful family was such a joy. Now they will have memories of this special season to enjoy for a lifetime.
