There is something so magical about watching your child step into pretend motherhood. We went to NYC in December and took the kids to FAO Schwarz. When we were there almost two years prior, Adelaide fell in love with the baby doll section. They have a little nursery set up and you can adopt a baby doll, so we knew when we went back someday, we’d likely be bringing home a new (plastic) member of our family. That is exactly what happened, as Adelaide adopted Baby Madeline, and she has been loving on her ever since. Within a week of bringing Madeline home, Adelaide asked me for a newborn portrait session in the studio with her doll. My mama heart melted, and of course I couldn’t say no! It resulted in the sweetest pretend newborn session.
Baby Madeline sleeps in Adelaide’s room in a cute little bed, which is actually a prop that I picked up years ago and painted purple, her favorite color! Adelaide takes such good care of her baby, feeding her, dressing her, and carrying her around in the little baby carrier. Her tenderness shines through in every photo as she holds, rocks, and cradles Madeline so gently.
Adelaide loved picking out outfits for herself and a headband for the doll. She had a whole series of poses and snuggles that she wanted to do with her baby. Then, she spied the doll carriage up on the shelf and was so excited to push her doll in it. I love how much she loves her babies, and how she always talks about being a mama when she grows up. I have no doubt that she’ll be an incredible mother, and it’s so fun watching her love on her dolls like this. I’m sharing these photos, and printing many of them, too, because I want to always be able to look back and see the sweet innocence and charm that comes along with being three years old.
This stage is so fleeting. One day the baby dolls will be replaced with bigger dreams and bigger adventures, but these portraits will always take me back to this sweet season of when she was three and her world revolved around her baby and becoming a mama someday. These are the moments I never want to forget.
That’s why I believe so deeply in photographing our children just as they are right now. Capturing their personality, imagination, tenderness, and the joy that defines this exact chapter.
Our Little Loves Portrait Sessions are perfect for capturing moments like these, allowing you to pause time and preserve their personality. Whether they’re snuggling a beloved doll, missing their two front teeth, or on the brink of their teenage years, these portraits become treasured keepsakes that you’ll both look back on.
