If you’re expecting a baby in Saratoga Springs, congratulations! Welcoming a new little one into your family is one of life’s most incredible milestones. Since 2012, I’ve had the privilege of photographing hundreds of newborns and families in the Capital Region, and one of the very first things I do with new clients is hop on a consultation call. That’s where we get to know each other, talk through your vision, and, most importantly, answer all of your questions about what to expect from your newborn session.
Over the years, I’ve noticed that many parents have the same questions (and concerns!), so I thought I’d share the top 6 frequently asked questions, or FAQs, about newborn sessions and the answers. If you’re considering a newborn session in Saratoga Springs, this guide will help you know what to expect and my process for ensuring a stress-free and enjoyable experience for your whole family.
Wardrobe is one of the most common concerns families have before a session, but I promise it’s simpler than you think. Soft, neutral tones are timeless and always photograph beautifully – think whites, creams, taupes, and muted pastels. These colors keep the focus on your baby and family connection, whereas bold patterns or bright colors can distract from your images.
As a bonus and to help take all the stress away, moms have access to my curated client wardrobe. My client closet is full of flattering, comfortable dresses designed to make you feel beautiful and confident postpartum. I’ll also provide styling recommendations for dads and siblings, so no one is left guessing what to wear.

We all know that babies arrive on their own timeline, which is why I book newborn sessions a little differently than my other photography sessions. When you reach out to reserve your session, I place your due date on my calendar, always knowing there is a window of time around the due date. I only take a limited number of newborn due dates each month so that every family has the flexibility they need.
Once your baby arrives, you’ll simply reach out to me within a day or so. From there, we’ll select a session date, ideally within the first 2–3 weeks after birth, when babies are still extra sleepy.

Absolutely not! While the first 2–3 weeks are ideal for those classic, sleepy newborn portraits, I also love photographing older newborns. Babies who are three, four, or even six weeks old bring their own magic to a session. They tend to be more alert, give wonderful eye contact, and sometimes even share their very first smiles. Older newborns are a little more filled out as well, which is wonderful for capturing their growth, which as we all know happens so quickly during this time.
Your baby will never be this small again, no matter their age. It’s always the right time to capture portraits you’ll treasure forever.

Absolutely! Your furry family members are always welcome. Many families choose to include their dog in a lifestyle newborn session at home, where pups are most relaxed and comfortable. However, dogs are also welcome in my studio. Just let me know that you want to bring your dog along, and I’ll share tips for keeping them calm and happy so we can capture sweet, natural portraits of your whole family.

I know this time can be stressful as you’re figuring out life with a newborn. Don’t worry about your session though – I’ll guide you through every step with a detailed prep guide in your welcome packet. In general, I recommend:
If your baby needs to stop throughout the session to eat, get a clean diaper or be soothed – don’t worry! Our sessions have plenty of time built in for this exact reason, as it is a normal and expected. My studio is set up with everything you and baby need to feel comfortable, relaxed, and supported.
This is such a common concern! Most toddlers are still adjusting to their new role when it’s time for the newborn session, and that’s okay. Your toddler’s world has just shifted in a big way, and my goal is to make them feel special and included.
I will start the session by focusing on your older child. If we are at my studio, I’ll introduce them to the toy corner, show them my camera, and even ask for their help picking out wraps or headbands. If it is an in-home session, I might ask them to show me their favorite toys, as well as include them and allow them to help me get set up. By involving them, they feel important and in control, which helps ease them into the session.
We usually begin with family portraits and, when the timing feels right, move into sibling shots. If your toddler isn’t ready to touch or hold the baby, I have tricks up my sleeve, such as safe “composite” portraits where I photograph them separately and merge the images together in Photoshop. That way, you’ll still have those cherished sibling images, no matter your toddler’s comfort level.
Every newborn session is different because every family is unique. My role as a Saratoga Springs newborn photographer is not just to take beautiful portraits, but to create an experience where you feel supported, prepared, and celebrated as you welcome your newest little love.
