My sweet girl turns four this month, and of course she wanted to celebrate with another cake smash.
One of the perks of being a photographer’s child (who also happens to have a sweet tooth!) is that you get all the birthday portrait sessions you could ever want. Lucky for me, both of my kids have begged me for cake smashes long past their first birthdays.
This year, Adelaide chose Ghost Spider as her theme. My sweet and spunky girl loves this pink-and-purple superhero, and we had so much fun creating a birthday celebration around her favorite character. For her portraits, we kept things simple and sweet with just her outfit, cake, and a giant number 4 — which also happened to double as the piñata at her birthday party — as the decor.
A true professional by now, Adelaide dug right into her cake and showed off her joyful personality the entire time. It’s funny to look back at her progression with birthday cakes over the years, from dainty little tastes and careful fingers to the full-on excitement and confidence she brings when a cake is placed in front of her now. I love watching her grow into herself, and documenting these birthday milestones has become one of my favorite traditions.
When most people think of cake smashes, they think of first birthdays. And while I absolutely love celebrating that milestone, I’ve always believed birthdays deserve to be documented long after the first candle is blown out.
The toddler and preschool years are filled with so much personality. At four years old, Adelaide has opinions about everything, endless imagination, and a confidence that makes me smile every day. She’s no longer a baby, but she’s not quite a big kid either. It’s such a fleeting season, and one that deserves to be remembered just as much as those early newborn days and first steps.
Birthday portraits are about more than the cake. They’re about capturing who your child is right now—the expressions, the laughter, the dimples, the favorite colors, the beloved characters, and all the little details that make this stage uniquely theirs. Every year tells a different story.
Whether your child is turning one, four, seven, or ten, there’s something special about pausing to celebrate them exactly as they are in this moment. Years from now, these photographs become a timeline of childhood—a reminder not only of how much they’ve grown, but of who they were along the way.
And if there’s cake involved? Even better.
Happy 4th Birthday to my sweet Ghost Spider-loving girl. I can’t wait to see what adventures this year brings.
