Older Awake Newborn Photos With Lots of Smiles

I recently welcomed baby Kiran to my Saratoga Springs studio for his newborn portraits. This little guy was a month old when he and his parents came by, and we were able to enjoy lots of eye contact and adorable expressions during his session because he was a little bit bigger and more awake! I absolutely loved working with Kiran and his family to create their heirloom portraits celebrating his arrival to the world! 

For Kiran’s session, we incorporated lots of neutrals with white. I’m obsessed with their family portraits with everyone in white. They’re stunning! We included a few pops of soft sky blue and sage green, which coordinates nicely with his nursery and their decor at home. I always encourage families to think about where they want to display images when deciding on a theme or color palette. I know Kiran’s portraits are going to look perfect displayed at home! 

My favorite part of working with Kiran and his parents might be that we were able to create a special gallery wall in their home to feature their favorite portraits. I love knowing that they’re going to enjoy these images on their wall every single day as their little boy grows. That’s why I do what I do: I want you to remember these moments and be able to relieve them as time slips away. 

Kiran, thank you for being such a sweet boy for me in the studio! Your session brought me so many new favorite portraits and I hope you’ll always see how loved you truly are in these moments.

Why You Should Hire a Newborn Photographer that Focuses on Newborn Safety

Hiring a newborn photographer can sometimes feel like a daunting task.  You are looking for someone who is going to hold and handle your brand new baby in the first few weeks of their life.  Someone who will spend a few hours with your family as you navigate new territory with your first baby (or second! or third! or fourth!).  Someone who will treat your family with care, walk you through the portrait experience with ease, and deliver heirlooms that you will treasure for decades.  

One of the most important things to consider when hiring a newborn photographer is the photographer’s training and experience photographing and posing newborns.  Whether you are considering a Fresh 48, lifestyle, or studio portrait session, safety is such a huge consideration.

Why is this so important? 

• Newborns cannot hold their head up on their own, and they must be posed with care to not put any stress on their joints, their circulation, or their airways.

• Newborns are not able to tell you when they are uncomfortable, so an expert in posing will gently guide the baby into comfortable positions, including baby-led posing options that keep the baby’s comfort and mood as the #1 priority.

• Newborns cannot regulate their body temperature, so an experienced photographer will know just how warm to keep the room and how to keep the baby cozy and comfortable while posing them.

• Newborns have fragile immune systems, and a photographer that puts safety first will have systems in place to protect the health of all of their littlest clients.

There are many poses that you see online that are actually composites, which means the photographer brings 2-3 images together in Photoshop to create one final image.  This is because some of those cute little poses are not safe for baby to do on their own (for example, the popular “froggy” pose where baby rests their head on their hands while laying on their belly).  Other poses require a parent to support the baby’s head to prevent it from leaning uncomfortably to the side, and their fingers are edited out in Photoshop later on.  

Another huge aspect of newborn safety to consider is posing the baby with siblings. Children are unpredictable, which can put many parents on high alert around the baby as they worry that an impulsive action might hurt their new baby. An experienced newborn photographer will only pose siblings with baby in a way that is developmentally appropriate for the siblings — whether that is laying down on a soft blanket, sitting on a bed, or in mom & dad’s lap where they can lean in to baby while being fully supported by mom and dad. Parents are always nearby spotting the baby, and the photographer will keep the siblings engaged in a fun and interactive way while also letting them know how to be safe around the baby.

Often in our studio we pose the siblings laying down on a rug like this. I lay down first with big brother or sister to show them what to expect, and then I place a pillow in their arms and have them pretend to hug it like they will hug the baby. We make up a safe word together that will be the magic word to mean “all done” — usually it’s something silly like “hot dog” or “unicorn”, and we remind them that they cannot move or get up until we say the magic word. Finally, we lay a sleepy baby in their arms after all of those safety steps have been taken. Usually it takes just a few seconds to capture the perfect sibling portrait, and that’s because we spent a few minutes first prepping for it!

Another favorite sibling portrait is actually a composite (remember, that’s where 2 images are stitched together in Photoshop). Sometimes toddlers are hesitant to get too close to the baby, and we will pose baby all by herself first in a crate or a basket. Then we will take baby out and mom or dad can hold her, while the toddler poses with the same crate or basket. Then the two images are brought together to create one beautiful sibling portraits! We don’t always need to use this technique, and sometimes the toddler will snuggle up with baby in the basket, but it’s a nice little trick to have on hand in case we need it!

Please, please, please. Whatever you do in your search for the perfect newborn photographer, please be sure to communicate your expectations and your concerns to your photographer. Ask they about their experience and training in safety, and make sure you are 100% comfortable putting your baby in their care during your portrait session. Your baby is your most precious gift, and you want to be sure to find a photographer who will take care of your little one like they would their own baby.

Best of 2019 Newborn Sessions with Saratoga Springs Baby Photographer

Every year I love going through all of my sessions and compiling a collection of favorites for a huge blog post, and this year I am so excited to share the “Best of 2019” newborn sessions!

I was truly honored to welcome so many babies to the studio and celebrate their arrival with their families. It really is the best job in the world to be invited into their lives to cuddle their newborns and photograph their first days with their new baby. I will never get tired of those new baby yawns, their cute little back rolls, and those tiny toes. Newborns are pure magic, and it’s such a joy to document this stage on camera!

We had the most amazing big brothers & sisters in the studio this year, and it was beautiful to see how sweet and cuddly they were with their new babies.

And baby makes three! So many beautiful moments for these brand new parents!

It’s always extra special when three generations join us at a newborn session, and I love capturing that special bond with all of the baby’s loved ones.

This year we really simplified the studio’s colors to keep the focus on the baby with clean, timeless portraits. I find white to be an absolutely beautiful color for brand new babies, and we started many of our sessions off with the baby in a clean white onesie just laying on a blanket, unposed and settling in to however was comfortable for them. Those were some of my favorite candid moments of the year!

And of course, swaddled up tight with whites & creams will never go out of style! Just look at these perfect little babies!

Let’s not forget our lifestyle sessions, which steal my heart every single time! I always love getting to photograph a family at home with their brand new baby. These sessions are a relaxed peek into their lives at home and we photograph the new family in the nursery, master bedroom, and any other spot with beautiful light! One of my absolute favorite spots this year was a wooden porch swing in the summertime.

As always, I am so incredibly grateful for all of the families that entrusted me with their most precious treasures this year. Thank you for inviting me into your lives to document this special time, and for letting me snuggle your little one in the process, too! :o)

Beautiful Newborn Portraits at our Saratoga Springs Baby Photography Studio

Our latest Baby Planner has arrived, and she is oh-so-sweet!

Meet Elliana. She visited me at the studio and was the most cuddly little baby. I love that we captured these portraits of her resting in her mommy & daddy’s arms to show just how small she was when she was born!

Looking over dad’s shoulder is always one of my favorite angles to capture during a newborn session. This is the view you’re never going to forget when you think back on holding your daughter in those first few weeks, and seeing this image twenty years from now will bring you right back to feeling the weight of her in your arms and the way she made her happy little newborn sighs when she settled in comfortably.

Welcoming Baby Brother - A Studio Newborn Portrait Session with Saratoga Springs Baby Photographer

I have been lucky enough to create portraits for this sweet family ever since they had only two little ones… and now they have FOUR! I absolutely loved celebrating their SON’S arrival with a studio newborn session. The big sisters were extra excited about their baby brother, whose gender was a surprise until birth, and they showered him in love and kisses the entire time.

We captured the sweetest cuddles with mom and dad, too. Lynsey rocked a flowy white gown from our Mama Wardrobe in the studio, and it looked so beautiful on her! I just love how clean & classic these mommy & baby portraits are in a neutral color palette!

Being their first boy, we had to pull out some blues for his portraits! The studio is stocked with gorgeous handmade knit layers in so many colors, and I love this navy on him.

Oliver's Newborn Session at our Saratoga Springs Portrait Studio

I want to start every newborn session in a white onesie from now on. It’s simple, classic, and pure perfection. I just LOVE these portraits of sweet little Oliver from when he first arrived at the studio. There is so much personality in this tiny little baby, and all of his newborn freshness is perfectly documented!

This sweet family came to me for their maternity session & Fresh 48 session, and I was thrilled to welcome them to our Saratoga Springs portrait studio for Oliver’s newborn portraits.

These moments when mom & dad cuddle up with their new baby at the beginning of our sessions are always some of my favorite moments to witness. It’s truly magical watching this bond unfold, and you really can watch them fall even more in love with their baby during the 20 minutes we’re doing family portraits together.

Sweet little Oliver Cody was the cuddliest little boy, and he loved being wrapped up snug in a swaddle. He fell right asleep and even had the cutest baby snore!

Baby mullet. It happens often with these fresh little babies, and it definitely deserves to be documented!

Baby smiles. These are such a gem and I always love when I happen to catch one during a newborn session!

I recently added a bunch of hand knit bump blankets to the prop closet, and I love their thick texture and how they photograph! This blue one and the white one above are a few of them — what do you think? I kind of wish I could make one in adult size!

Newborn Portraits for Penelope James

Little miss Penelope is another one of our Baby Planners, and I am so looking forward to watching her grow this year! It feels like only a few weeks ago that we enjoyed her mama’s maternity session here at our Saratoga Springs portrait studio, and then in no time at all they were back with their baby girl!

We chose plenty of neutrals for Penelope’s newborn session — white, cream, and blush pink are always timeless favorites for baby girl sessions!

Don’t you just love this little smile that peeked out?!?!

This little sweetheart was awake almost her entire session, which is rare and usually makes newborn sessions rather tricky because newborns have more relaxed facial expressions and they are much easier to pose when they are asleep. Penelope kept looking around, wanting to take everything in with her soulful eyes. She made a few funny little faces, but so many adorable ones, too! I just adore these awake parent portraits!

Holden's Newborn Session with his Big Brothers

Our newest Baby Planner baby is here! Holden Patrick joined me at the Attleboro studio for his newborn session, and I had such a wonderful time celebrating his arrival with this sweet family! Holden’s big brothers are both so excited and helpful with their newest sibling, and they did an amazing job during the session.

Funny story…. when the big brothers were getting dressed at the beginning of the session, one of the boys slid his arms into his button-down shirt and his thumbs got caught on the button at the cuff. He exclaimed, “Cool! Thumb holes!” and immediately loved the shirt because he thought it was like those athletic shirts that have the slits for the thumbs. His mom and I couldn’t stop laughing and then we had to break it to him that he wouldn’t be using the “thumb holes” during portraits. We convinced him that rolled cuffs were way cooler, and he was excited to wear his fancy shirt. Too funny!

Aren’t they the best big brothers you’ve ever seen?!?!

He doesn’t seem to mind giving up his title as the baby of the family one bit!

Both big brothers had nautical inspired newborn portraits done when they were born, and it was really important to the family to do a matching portrait with white starfish and white layers. I love what we came up with, and it will look perfect as a canvas on the wall with the boys’ portraits!

And of course, the nautical-inspired session wouldn’t be complete without some blue and white stripes!

A Blush and Cream Newborn Session for Madeleine Frances

It’s been a baby boom here in the studio lately, and I am loving every single minute of it! It’s not everyone that gets to go to work and cuddle sweet little newborn babies like little miss Madeleine. Just look at that head of dark hair and her perfect little lips!

This sweet baby girl was so wonderful during her session, and she didn’t make a peep the entire time! We did the most adorable setups for her newborn portraits, and I love the soft colors and florals that we used. She was an absolute doll and truly a joy to photograph.

A Newborn Session for Austin and Big Sister Avery

You guys aren’t going to believe the adorable sibling portraits we captured during Austin’s studio newborn session.

This handsome baby boy has the sweetest big sister, and she was AMAZING during his portrait session. I love every single photo of the two of them together.

We turned one of their portraits into a 24” circle wooden wall art piece, and when I pulled it out of the box I literally gasped. It truly took my breath away with how beautiful it was, and I’m so excited for it to be hanging in Austin’s nursery.

I loved the beautiful neutral set-ups that just let this sweet baby’s creamy skin and dark hair POP. He was so sleepy and angelic, and it really was a dream session!

Doesn’t he look so sweet in navy and white stripes? This is one of our studio outfits, and I love how perfectly it fits sweet little Austin! The way he crosses his tiny feet just melts my heart, too!

An Awake Newborn Session with Nora Jude in our Saratoga Springs Portrait Studio

Not every baby is a sleepy little newborn, and sometimes we get the tiniest clients who are also the most alert despite all of my efforts to lull them to sleep (heat, swaddles, white noise, a full belly, gentle rocking, and so many more tricks that usually work for 90% of our newborn sessions!).  

Nora Jude was the tiniest, most perfect little baby girl, and she wanted nothing more than to watch everything that was going on during her newborn session.  At 13 days old, she didn't want to miss a thing, so we went with the flow and captured plenty of wide-eyed shots of this brand new baby.  I just love all of the different expressions she gave me during our little staring "show-down"!

I eventually won the staring contest, and this sweet 6-pound girl drifted off to sleep so that we could capture some adorable, sleepy poses.

Of course, a subtle Christmas set-up was a must for this winter baby!

As I was looking through my viewfinder to take this family portrait, I remember saying, "Oh my gosh, this is definitely a new favorite family portrait!  I just love this pose!"  Mom, dad, and baby look so cozy together, and you can really tell how small their daughter is all curled up in dad's hands like that.  This is definitely a family pose that we will see more of in the studio!

Welcome Emma Adele - A Pink and Girly Studio Newborn Session with Saratoga Springs Newborn Photographer

Emma Adele.

I just love this sweet girl's name -- it's as beautiful as she is, and just as perfect!

This little sweetheart visited me at our Saratoga Springs studio for her newborn portraits, and her mama asked for lots of neutrals with a hint of girly-girl details.  We used soft pinks, grays, lots of texture, and the daintiest of floral headbands.  It was pure perfection!

This little awake series are a few of my FAVORITE shots from Emma's portrait session.  I always love laying babies on their backs when they're starting to stir, and giving them a little wiggle room so that they'll wake up a bit.  That tiny baby yawn is my favorite, and I can't even get over those sparkling and inquisitive eyes!

Emma's parents were just so happy loving on their baby girl, and I adore this sweet moment captured of the three of them.

Welcome, Kona - A Neutral and Minimalist Studio Newborn Session - Boston Newborn Photographer

Many years ago, I remember thinking that white, cream, and beige were "boring."  I lived in an apartment with all white walls, and I couldn't wait to get out of there so that I could paint all of my rooms different colors.

Flash forward, and nowadays there is nothing I love more than neutrals.  Give me all of the whites, creams, and grays, and my heart is happy.  Especially with our newborn sessions -- these babies are so fresh & pure, and these soft neutral colors are the perfect complement to truly showcase how beautiful these new little ones are on their own.  There is nothing to distract from their perfection!

Kona visited me at our Attleboro studio with her big sister Kailani.  Her mom requested all neutrals, because just like me, her heart goes all pitter-patter when she sees those whites & creams together.  Kona's skin was so creamy and beautiful, and her dark hair perfectly framed her face, making her pop against our simple backdrops.

This sleepy little girl wanted to see what was going on, and while she resisted sleep for awhile, she eventually gave in and closed those beautiful sparkling eyes of hers.  Not before we got some great wide-eyed shots first, though!

It's always unpredictable with toddlers and newborns, and Kailani took awhile to warm up to the idea of being in a portrait with her baby sister.  Later in the session, she decided now would be the perfect time and she walked on over and kissed Kona right on her forehead without prompting.  She's already becoming such a good big sister!

Quinn's Neutral Newborn Session at our Saratoga Springs Portrait Studio - Saratoga Springs NY Newborn Photographer

Ohhhhhh my goodness!  Quinn Madlina officially melted my heart during her newborn session.  Please bring me all of your cute, cuddly, smiley little babies!

I just loved photographing this sweet baby girl.  She was so calm and peaceful the entire session, and such a beauty, too!  I don't think I've ever seen a baby with more perfect lips than Quinn, and those dark curls just framed her face perfectly!

I always tell families that if they have a special family heirloom they'd like to incorporate into their newborn session, to bring it along with them.  Quinn's mother told me she still had the newborn blanket that was made for her when she was a baby, and I was thrilled when she pulled this beautiful handmade pink & white blanket from her diaper bag.  Quinn was a fan, too!

I've been having so much fun incorporating our new chunky knit layers into our newborn sessions at the studio lately, and I just love how these soft textures complemented Quinn's beautiful complexion.  Doesn't she look amazing against cream fabrics?!?!  Such a beauty!

Grandma joined us at the studio for their newborn session, and I always love it when grandparents jump in for a three generation portrait and a few individuals with their new grandbaby.  She was absolutely beaming while holding her new granddaughter, and I can already tell that she is going to have so many wonderful adventures with this sweet baby girl.

Declan James - A Saratoga Springs Newborn Session - Saratoga Springs NY Newborn Photographer

You know what I love during our newborn sessions?  When I get a wide-awake baby who is so curious about the world and they give the most amazing eye contact.  

Declan James did not disappoint, and this sweet baby boy definitely won the staring contest at our Saratoga Springs newborn studio.  Don't you just love those sparkling eyes of his?

We recently added new knit layers to the studio collection, and I loved incorporating these soft and chunky textures into his newborn portraits.  

Doesn't he look so cozy all wrapped up and sleeping?  (Because yes, Declan finally fell asleep... which I suppose means that I won the staring contest after all!!)

These overhead birds-eye shots are always my favorite showing just how tiny these newborn babies are in our baskets and bowls!

Like so many of our NSP families, Declan's mom and dad are fans of the ocean and love that nautical theme.  They brought an adorable hand-knit outfit from a friend with a cute little anchor on it, so of course we took a few portraits of Declan in his sailor gear!

And finally, our family portraits always make me smile!  This new mom & dad were so excited to cuddle their baby boy and pose with him when he was all wrapped up tight.  We loved how he kept bringing his feet up to his face, and no matter how we moved his little toes he kept wanting to use that one foot as a little kickstand for his cheek.  What a flexible little boy, and you can definitely tell how he was curled up just like this in the womb only two short weeks before these portraits were taken!

Camille's Studio Newborn Session with Big Sister Lydia - Boston Baby Photographer

We are in the middle of a BABY BOOM around here, and I am so excited to share all of our recent studio newborn sessions and lifestyle newborn sessions.  Let's start it off with sweet little Camille's session at our Attleboro portrait studio.  

Filled with soft fabrics and whimsical colors, this session was a dream to photograph!  I particularly loved watching Camille's big sister Lydia with her new baby sister -- so many adorable moments together!

Plus, who doesn't love baby back rolls?  Squishy newborns are my favorite! 

While I don't typically do a lot of black & whites, I just love the simplicity of this white-on-white image, and now I'm eager to do more in this style!  The little lace headband was perfect on Miss Camille.

We have a new chair in the studio.  It's a linen and whitewashed wooden chair that I have spent months searching for, and I'm so happy with how beautiful it is in sibling and parent shots for our newborn clients!  The chair arms made it the perfect spot for big sister Lydia to sit securely with her new baby sister, and I love this adorable moment shared with her mama!

Every single newborn session includes family portraits as we celebrate your baby's arrival together.  These ones were just so adorable, and I have so many favorites from this session!  Just look at how excited she is about her new baby sister!

Sleepy Newborn Photos - Saratoga Springs & Boston Newborn Photographer

Ask any newborn photographer -- there is nothing we love more than a sleepy, cuddly newborn baby!  Those little baby yawns that come right before they slip into what we lovingly call a "milk drunk" state of sleep are the best!  

So why do photographers love sleepy newborn babies so much?  Well, they are much easier to settle into a pose without stretching or startling themselves awake.  For a baby that is just a week or two old, when they are awake they typically want to eat.  Of course, you didn't hire a newborn photographer to capture dozens of photos of your baby eating, so we like a baby to have a full belly and be nice and settled during their session.

When a newborn baby is in a deep sleep during a studio session, it's easy to move them from the beanbag to buckets and other small props to curl them up inside of.  

This also gives your photographer the chance to really slow down and zoom in on all of the details that you don't want to forget -- their perfect pout, the flaky newborn skin on their hands, their tiny toes, and that thin layer of downy newborn hair on their back.

Plus, sleepy newborn smiles are OH-SO-AMAZING!!!

But do newborn babies need to be asleep during their newborn sessions?
No, of course not!  

I actually love it when they're awake for a few shots so that we can capture their sparkly eyes and intense gaze.  Check out yesterday's blog post filled with so many of

Wide Awake Newborn Portraits - Saratoga Springs & Boston Newborn Photographer

I'm going to let you in on a little secret...

Whether it's a lifestyle newborn session at home, or a newborn session here in my Saratoga Springs studio, it's not always guaranteed that the baby will fall asleep!  

Of course, newborn sessions go much more smoothly (and quickly!) when the fresh new baby is asleep most of the time.  We're able to pose the baby into those adorable little curled up poses, wrap them in swaddles, unwrap them, and move them from one setup to another without disturbing them.  

But sometimes, babies are curious little things and they like to see everything that is going on around them -- I swear they must be wondering who this girl with the camera is!  So when we have awake babies during a newborn session, we go with the flow and capture their sparkling eyes and their powerful gaze.  And we hope that they eventually fall asleep by using the million-and-one tricks that I have up my sleeve as a newborn photographer to get tiny little babies to fall into Dreamland!

I do love it when we get those wide-eyed shots during our newborn sessions, though!  This typically happens more often during our lifestyle sessions at home, and it's a great opportunity to capture some portraits in their crib, and cuddles with mom & dad.  If we're bringing siblings in (especially toddlers) that is always much easier with an asleep newborn, though!

Killian's Studio Newborn Session - Saratoga Springs Newborn Photographer

April was the month that it rained babies here at our Saratoga Springs boutique portrait studio, and I was getting phone calls from new moms every few days letting me know that their little one had arrived.  It was truly such a magical month, and I am so grateful for all of the baby cuddles that I got to enjoy, and the incredible moments I was lucky enough to capture of new moms & dads welcoming their babies into their families.

Killian came to the studio for his portrait session, and I had so much fun with his mom & dad.  They were absolutely amazing and relaxed the entire time, and we spent the three-hour session getting to know one another, learning about their jobs, the dad's tattoos (such a cool story behind those!), and a very unique baby company that makes gear that this police officer dad loves.  I always enjoy when the clients I work with make it so easy to pass a few hours together during the session, and then we get together a few weeks later for the gallery reveal and it's like old friends sharing the baby's images together.  Really, how did I luck out with such incredible clients?  

But of course, Killian was the star of the session.  He has the sweetest little lips, and soft hair that is blonde in some spots -- I see so few blonde newborns, so it's always a treat when one comes to the studio!  He absolutely loved the Huck Finn pose (below), and was super comfy in this adorable hand-knit romper that I just recently added to the studio collection.  

This sweet little boy slept so well during his session, and he was the perfect little model for us!  There were soft "oooooh, how cute!" cries the moment this bear bonnet went on, and he loved it so much that he couldn't help but give us a cute little smile!

Oftentimes parents like to bring a small sentimental item to use during their session -- a handmade blanket passed down from great grandma, a medal from a marathon mom ran while newly pregnant, an item that represents one of their careers.  Killian's dad brought his police badge & hat to use during the session -- he's with the Schenectady Police Department.  I love how we were able to capture a few images of Killian holding his dad's police badge!  

When his dad told me the significance behind his tattoos (every single item represents a family member and the story behind the entire sleeve is truly amazing!), I knew that we had to incorporate this visual family history into his portraits.  This may be one of my favorite dad & baby images we've capture so far this year!  

And of course, his mama was absolutely radiant and so happy to have her little baby boy cuddled up in her arms.  I love being able to capture these moments that show parents in their first days of parenthood, getting to know their little one.  It really is magical!  

Thank you for such an incredible session together!  I look forward to seeing Killian again this year as he grows!
