Every summer since 2019, I’ve made a point of taking beach portraits of my own children, Grayson and Adelaide, while we’re on Cape Cod. What started when my son was just a baby has become one of my favorite family traditions. It’s something I look forward to every single year. These portraits are so much more than pictures of my kids in cute outfits. They’re a way for me to document their personalities and preserve the memories we’re making together each summer.
This year, my daughter was so excited about our annual beach portraits that she actually requested a second evening at the beach to take more pictures! She picked out two dresses, came armed with an entire arsenal of ideas for poses and prompts, and really leaned into the experience. As a photographer and a mom, I couldn’t have loved it more.
Our beach portraits were squeezed into the end of a long, wonderful evening at the beach. The kids had caught a ridiculous number of hermit crabs, enjoyed a pizza picnic at sunset, and spent plenty of time digging tunnels in the sand. We were having the perfect summer evening. The type of day you hope to have on summer vacation.
Before the sun could set, we quickly dusted off some sand, wiped their faces, changed outfits, and made the most of the last bit of sunshine before the sun went down. Voila! Some of our favorite memories from Cape Cod this summer, all wrapped into a perfect evening at the beach. We had so much fun, and the resulting photographs captured exactly what I want to remember about our time on Cape Cod this summer.
It’s easy to put a lot of pressure on family photos, but the last thing I want is for you to stress about pictures. Everything doesn’t have to be perfect for your family portraits to be beautiful. When you look back at your family portraits years from now, I don’t want you to remember the stress of trying to make everything perfect. I want you to remember how much fun you had together.
I am a big advocate for relaxing into your session. Let your kids play and just enjoy being together. It’s okay to make a fun adventure of it like we did. Go for a walk, collect seashells, build a sandcastle, or enjoy an ice cream cone together. If everyone needs a quick cleanup before the camera comes out, that’s perfectly fine, too!
As a photographer, I know how to guide families through a session, find beautiful light, and create portraits that you’ll love displaying in your home. As a mom, I also know that the photographs I treasure most are the ones that bring me right back to a moment in time.
I want to remember Grayson’s expressions, Adelaide’s enthusiasm, the way they played together, and their little personalities. I want to remember the feeling of those summer evenings on Cape Cod, when the days were long, the sand was everywhere, and we could spend hours simply enjoying being together. Those are the memories I want to hold onto. That’s what I want for your family, too.
These annual beach portraits in Cape Cod are something I look forward to each year. I can’t wait to document them again next summer and see how much they’ve grown.
