I’ve had the joy of photographing this family every year since their oldest daughter was born eight years ago. It really is amazing getting to know these families, traveling on this parenthood journey with them, and watching their little ones grow. I love when we get together and catch up on all that’s happened over the past year. Clients truly become friends, and it’s truly one of my favorite parts of being a family photographer. This year, we met up for beautiful, sun-soaked family portraits in the Rose Garden in Schenectady, and it was just as wonderful as ever.
There is something really special about having a family photographer you return to year after year. It creates a level of trust and familiarity that you can’t replicate. It allows everyone, especially kids, to get used to feel comfortable. On top of that, I get to know them on a more personal level, which I love. It allows me to connect and establish long lasting relationships with my families.
The familiarity and level of comfort really helps kids, as they always do better when they know the photographer and what to expect. It also helps me know which kids are quick to smile and which ones might need a little more time to warm up. Instead of spending the first part of every session getting comfortable with a new photographer, we can jump right in. Your children can be themselves, you can relax, and we can focus on capturing the personalities and relationships that make your family yours. After eight years together, this family feels like old friends, and their portraits reflect that comfort.
One of my favorite things about photographing returning families is that we can be intentional about the portraits we create. Over the years of working together you already know what photos you have and what portraits you want to print and display around the house. That helps us come up with a plan and ensure we shoot with photos specifically in mind, creating a mix of family portraits, individual images, sibling moments, and the little in-between moments that give you plenty of options when it comes time to choose your favorites.
The Rose Garden in Schenectady is one of my favorite places for family portraits, especially when everything is in bloom. There is something about being surrounded by layers of roses, lush greenery, and beautiful summer light that makes it such a lovely backdrop for family photography. However, as beautiful as the setting is, my favorite part of these sessions is always the family themselves.
It’s hard to believe that eight years ago, I was photographing this family as brand-new parents with their first baby. Now, that baby is all grown up and a big sister! I am already looking forward to the next time I see this sweet family!
