There is something so special about photographing twins, especially when you get the privilege of watching them grow through their first year. This sweet family is part of my Collective Membership, which allows you to choose up to four sessions within 18 months. I first met Lillian and Theodore about six months ago for their milestone portrait session. It was so much fun welcoming them back to the studio for their first birthday portraits and seeing just how much they had changed in those few short months. I absolutely adored watching their unique personalities shine through during their joyful birthday portraits.
Theo is more reserved and thoughtful. He’s a serious little observer who likes to take everything in before deciding exactly how he feels about it, while Lillian is hugely expressive and energetic. I love how beautifully these two balance each other. It was magical watching them interact knowing that they are each other’s best (and first!) friends in the world. You can already see that beautiful connection developing between them. Photographing these adorable twins gave me the opportunity to capture who they are individually, but also the special relationship they share as twin siblings.
I especially adored the family portraits we captured before their cake smash. Both babies were full of huge smiles and giggles, and we captured so many joyful expressions that their parents had a very difficult time choosing their favorites!
Getting genuine smiles from little ones is one of my favorite parts of being a children’s photographer. I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve to get babies laughing, smiling, and looking toward the camera, but I also know that every child is different. Some babies need a little more time to warm up, while others are curious and want to watch everything happening around them. My job is to meet them where they are. We’ll play games, make silly noises, sing songs, and use all of my favorite little tricks to bring out those natural expressions to help even the most hesitant babies to feel comfortable. It made me so happy to see how excited and animated these two were for family portraits. Their smiles were completely genuine, and their personalities were shining through in every image.
One of my favorite moments actually happened after the session. When the twins’ parents sat down to review their gallery and choose their favorite portraits, there were so many oooohs and aaaaahs over their sweet babies. They kept pointing out the different expressions, smiles, and little personalities captured throughout the session. Those moments mean so much to me.
They weren’t just choosing pretty pictures of their twins. They were choosing the expressions they already knew and loved. The smiles they would recognize years from now and the little details that make Lillian and Theodore uniquely themselves. Knowing that these portraits will be printed, displayed, and cherished makes the entire experience even more meaningful to me.
The first year goes by so quickly. Six months ago, Lillian and Theodore were still tiny babies, and now they’re one-year-olds with big smiles, who are increasingly mobile, and share a beautiful bond that is already so apparent. This is one of the reasons I love photographing families through my Collective Membership.
I feel incredibly lucky to spend my days photographing these beautiful little people and the families who love them so completely. This first birthday session was filled with so much joy and I loved every minute of it.
