I absolutely adored this soft blue newborn session for sweet baby Grant. The blue hues woven throughout and layers we used in his individual portraits complemented the family’s outfits beautifully. One of my favorite parts of designing a newborn session is pulling together colors and styling that feel cohesive, not only within the current gallery and outfit choices, but also with a family’s previous portraits. Since I was fortunate enough to capture their eldest son’s newborn portraits a couple years earlier, I was able to make Grant’s session different enough while still tying into their firstborn’s portraits.
It created a timeless gallery that will look incredible displayed together on the walls of their home along with their firstborn’s newborn portraits that featured similar colors. I love when families think long-term about how their portraits will be displayed together over the years. Now this sweet family has a meaningful visual story of their growing family.
Not to mention, seeing this family again as they welcomed their second baby boy was extra special. It means the world to me when families continue to choose me to document life’s most important moments and memories. Seeing Grant’s big brother step into his new role was incredibly sweet. Toddlers around two years old are in such a fun season of life, and becoming a sibling is a huge adjustment, which can make photos tricky.
Sometimes they arrive ready to snuggle the baby, and sometimes they need a little extra time and encouragement to be in front of the camera. That’s completely normal. No matter what, we always make it work. Between games, snacks, silly noises, a few strategic bribes, lots of patience, and occasionally a touch of Photoshop magic, we create beautiful sibling and family portraits. The key is never forcing a photo or perfection. Instead we meet little ones where they are and make the experience feel fun and safe for them.
Sessions like this are such a beautiful reminder of the benefits of establishing a long-term relationship with your family photographer! When families return year after year, there’s already a level of trust and comfort in place. Parents know what to expect, and depending on the age of your children, they do too. As you return to the same photographer, everyone feels more relaxed and comfortable each time, and the entire experience feels easier and more natural for everyone involved.
It also helps create consistency in your family’s galleries over time. Your portraits flow together beautifully with similar styling, editing, and colors, which creates a cohesive visual story of your family as it grows.
Watching families return with new babies, bigger siblings, and evolving personalities is truly one of my favorite parts of this work. Not to mention, many families often become dear friends, which is priceless to me as I love the relationships with all my families.
Everything about this session felt soft, timeless, and full of love. The dreamy blue tones, sweet sibling moments, and joyful family moments created portraits that will be treasured for many years to come. Thank you to this amazing family for inviting me back into your lives to continue documenting your story.
